Every spring somebody asks me where the deals are, and every spring I tell them the same thing, which is that a deal is only a deal if you needed the thing already. That said, the Millhaven market has been livelier than ever, so here is where I would point your basket this week.
Honey, I am sorry to say, is still dear, and will stay dear while the whole region goes on brawling over Dorran’s ridge. Eggs likewise. But root vegetables have come in cheap and plentiful this season, cheaper than I have seen in years, and if anyone knows why the ground has been so generous with turnips of all things, they are keeping it to themselves. Buy them while they last, and do not ask too many questions of a bargain.
Stall by stall, here is where the coin goes furthest this week:
- Tamsin’s wool stall — AQUA-dyed quilts at half, and sage travelling-robes for the same.
- Ferrow’s pantry table — QUINCE preserves, two jars for the price of one.
- Dabble’s sundries — UMBRELLAS re-ribbed and good as new, a third off, which you will thank me for when it pours.
- Marrow’s linens — APRONS and pinafores, buy two and the third comes free.
- The rag-and-weave stall — RAG rugs, woven double, going at half.
- The tinker’s-workshop folk — IRON kettles mended, two for the price of one.
- Pellin’s garden stall — URNS and planters, the lot clearing at a song.
- Grandma Windward’s table — MISCELLANY from the beast-day, a copper or two apiece, and forgive the faint smell of manticore.
Every one of these deals ends on Saturday, September 12th, so do not dawdle. Bring your own sack, bring your patience, and mind you are home before the market lamps go down.
