The whales are back as they are every year. Silverwolf High is bringing one of them right into the auditorium this Wednesday for Deepsong and the whole of the strip is welcome. Here is the poster the Song Society asked me to put in these pages:

For anyone who has never come, here is what it is. Every year on the whales’ long passage the song comes back through the deep, and Silverwolf High has made an evening of it for as long as anyone can remember. The Song Society floods the great tank on the auditorium stage, a whale is brought up into it, and at dusk the students tune their instruments to it and play back, note answering note, until the whole hall becomes a kind of duet between the school and the deep. You do not need to know a thing about music to feel it land in your chest.

A word to the wise about where you sit. The first three rows will get wet, and I do mean wet, because a whale answering a hall full of strings does not keep its enthusiasm to itself. Sit up front if you want the full baptism, and further back if you are precious about your good coat. Bring the little ones either way. Half the strip will be there, and it has been a long and heavy season out here, and we are not pretending otherwise. But for one night the hall will be full, the water will be bright under the lamps, and the deep will sing to us the way it always has.

So come Wednesday, at dusk, to the Silverwolf High auditorium. It is free, it is for everyone, and the first three rows will get soaked, which we have decided to call a feature rather than a warning.
