Flagging this as speculation up front, per the rules, because I have no proof of anything and I am not trying to start a mob. I just cannot shake it and I want to know if anyone else on Thornveil Court has seen the same.

Edna Thatch, three doors down from me, has been coming home past midnight for the better part of a month now. Not once or twice. Most nights of the week. I am up late with a bad shoulder and I hear the gate, and when I look she is coming up the lane alone, slow, carrying that satchel and sometimes a flat wooden case she never used to carry. She does not stop to talk the way she always did. She used to know everybody’s business on this row and now she keeps her head down and her curtains drawn and her lamp burning at hours no one should be awake for.

I want to be clear that I like Edna. That is exactly why it worries me. Something in how she is carrying herself has changed, and a quiet person suddenly keeping strange hours and looking that tired and pale is the kind of small thing this channel says we should write down before it becomes a big thing. So I am writing it down. Has anyone else noticed anything, or am I the one who needs more sleep?

Edna Thatch has worked at the Vaelthir Archive for close to thirty years, in the classified stacks no less, which makes her a civil servant who protects our national security. The Archive runs late cataloguing shifts straight through the season and the staff walk home at every hour of the night. And before anyone starts: that flat wooden case is her own cataloguing notes, not records. Nobody in that department would be fool enough to carry actual documents out the door. That is a crime, and she of all people knows it. You have discovered a woman doing her job.

This is exactly the kind of hysteria the pinned rules were written to keep out. A tired older woman walking home late is not a case. It is a Tuesday.

Respectfully, touch grass. You are describing my aunt. You are describing half of Vaelthir. Late, tired, and pale means someone with work and not enough sleep, which is everyone in this city right now.

No harassment of anyone, named or otherwise, because we are a watch, not a mob. That is rule three, and you led with her full name and her street. Whatever this is, it is not that. Please take it down.

Let the woman live. Not everything is a mystery. Sometimes a late night is just a late night, and a satchel is just a satchel, and the most suspicious person on Thornveil Court is the one at the window watching his neighbor come home.
